Materials, Pavements and Assets

Asset Management
The development of optimal infrastructure asset, program and business management strategies can lead to more effective outcomes. Level5Design works with its customers to improve the delivery of their projects and programs, and to identify ways to reduce the whole of life costs of their investments and business operations while increasing the revenue returns from underperforming assets. We do this by:
  • Devising relevant fit for purpose strategies
  • Identifying opportunities to integrate and enhance existing asset management processes
  • Optimising maintenance and rehabilitation processes
  • Undertaking specialised technical feasibility studies
  • Preparing technical specifications for road and rail applications
  • Encouraging innovation in project planning and design
  • Evaluating project proposals and undertaking economic analysis
  • Leveraging existing and planned investment
  • Supplying project, program and portfolio management and implementation services
  • Providing tender preparation and assessment services including contract management and evaluation
  • Conducting business analysis and transformation strategies
  • Undertaking capacity and resource planning and reviews
  • Undertaking pavement technology research and investigations
  • Preparing detailed program of works
  • Undertaking performance monitoring and project procurement
  • Advising on the use of innovative new materials and technologies

Materials Science and Pavement Engineering
Level5Design have extensive materials science and engineering experience including the development of technical specifications, guidelines and standards. Recent work includes the development of technical specifications for state government on:
  • Roads, busways and paths
  • Landscape architecture for train stations and buildings
  • Design of drainage
  • Earthworks and general fill
  • Slope stability, geotextiles and erosion protection
  • Design of reinforced concrete, concrete durability and sprayed concrete

Innovative Materials:
We have been working extensively with the following recovered, recycled and other innovative replacement materials:
  • Crushed recycled concrete
  • Recycled crushed glass
  • Other construction and demolition waste derived materials including recycled brick and tile and recycled sands
  • Low carbon and geopolymer concretes
  • Food and garden organics (FOGO)
  • Recycled plastics
  • Crumb rubber binders
  • Waste water
  • Reclaimed and manufactured sands (including lithium ore sand byproducts)
  • Recycled rail ballast
  • Reclaimed asphalt product (RAP)

Infrastructure Applications:
We have been exploring the use of these materials in infrastructure projects as replacements for:
  • Imported fills / sand (road and rail embankments, etc.)
  • Roadbase and subbase
  • Pavement wearing courses (asphalt and spray sealing)
  • Non-structural and pre-cast concrete
  • Cementitious binders
  • Stormwater drainage
  • Retaining walls
  • Noise walls
  • Access tracks and paths
  • Landscaping (soil conditioners, mulch and compost)

Project Track Record:
A sample of relevant projects include:
  • Viability of using Recycled Plastics in Asphalt and Sprayed Sealing
  • Revision of Specifications for the Reuse of Recycled Materials on Rail Projects
  • Market Sounding Report on Greener, Low Carbon & Geopolymer Concrete Products
  • Construction and Demolition Materials Education Toolbox
  • Bunbury Outer Ring Road Recycled First Plan
  • Development of Specifications for the Use of Recycled Materials on the Bunbury Outer Ring Road Project
  • Development of Model Specification for Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) in Landscaping
  • Viability of using High Concentration of Crumb Rubber for Road Construction
  • Creation of Innovation Hub and Product Stewardship Scheme Material Assessment Process
  • Specification for Recycled Plastic Pipes
  • Research of Waste Derived and Low Embedded Carbon Sound Walls
